Sunday Morning Adult Classes for Winter/Spring 2010
Starting January 10, 2010 --- Between the worship services at 9:35
Our goal is to grow together to be what the Bible calls "mature people in Christ." That takes the very best we have to give. We are offering four different classes. Here's what's happening on Sunday mornings for adults:
“Why Church History?”
led by Pastor Dave Wilkinson and Dr. Daryl Fisher-Ogden in the Fellowship Hall
Where did the Pope come from? What was the motive for the Crusades and the Inquisition? Did St. Francis really talk to animals or was he up to something else? Why did it take so long for the church to get rolling in world-wide mission? What started the Reformation and was it really necessary? Why was Vatican II such a big deal? How did praying to saints and the Virgin Mary come about? Where is world-wide Christianity headed? Pastor Dave Wilkinson and Dr. Daryl Fisher-Ogden will lead a study in the Fellowship Hall on Roots the Story of the Christian Church from the close of the Book of Acts to the Present Day. As we study the story of the church we see how Jesus has worked with other people in other places. We meet a fascinating cast of characters like Augustine, Aquinas, Anselm, Abelard, Arias and Athanasius. We’ll learn from the relationships they had with Jesus. We’ll see how the church has survived many self-inflicted wounds and discover that it wouldn’t exist today except that it’s God’s creation. Above all, we’ll learn more about what we as Christians believe today and why.
“Prophecy Smophecy”
led by Associate Pastor Janet Loughry in the Fireside Room
Jesus is unique among all people in history. He is the embodied fulfillment of centuries of prophecies. These prophecies are called “Messianic” prophecies because they refer to the Messiah, the “anointed one” or “chosen one” and are found in the Old Testament. They foretell Jesus’ place of birth, details of His life, His mission, His nature, His death, and His resurrection. We need to remember that these prophecies or promises from God were written centuries before Jesus was born. In this class we will look at these key prophecies (and a few others). We will learn what was going on in the world at the time of the first utterings about our Lord and see how God chose to reveal His truth in the New Testament. Along with the Bible, we will draw upon our denomination’s Book of Confessions, and current authors.
